About The Cover
Meriwether Lewis is the subject of the painting on the cover; the
painting depicts him wearing his apron as master of the lodge.
The Montana Masonic Foundation acquired it for the Masonry
in Montana exhibit that will be housed at the newly remodeled
Montana Masonic Museum when it reopens. Tom Saubert, a
Montana artist, created the painting. The fi rst freemason to enter
what would become Montana in 1805 was Meriwether Lewis,
who served as the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Meriwether Lewis joined Door to Virtue Masonic Lodge #44
when he was twenty-two in early 1797. Lewis was instrumental
in the creation of St. Louis Lodge #111 and served as its initial
‘Worshipful Master’ in 1808.
